The Crimes of Florida Death Row Inmate Emilia Carr
Emilia Carr, 26, was sentenced to death for her role in the murder of Heather Strong in what authorities described as a deadly love triangle. Case Summary Josh Fulgham and Heather Strong started dating when Strong was 15 years old. Their relationship was tumultuous from the beginning, but despite it they had two children together. In 2003 the family moved from Mississippi to Marion County, Florida. Their fighting continued and over the next several years the couple fought, broke up, and then reunited several times. In June 2008, during one of their separations, Strong decided she and the children would move in with the couples friend, Benjamin McCollum. The plan was that she would be the live-in nanny for McCollums two children, but after about three weeks their relationship became intimate. Fulgham did not like that Strong lived with McCollum, even though he engaged to Emilia Carr, who had three children and was pregnant with his child. Over the next six months Fulgham stalked andà harassed both Strong and McCollum repeatedly and threatened them both with a gun. According to friends, Strong seemed very happy with McCollum and with her new life. They found it surprising when she decided to leave McCollum and return to Fulgham in December 2008. Carr was also surprised by the couples reunion. A few weeks into December, she was told by Fulgham that their relationship was over and that she had to move out. She told friends that she loved Fulgham and did not know how she would live without him, especially since she was pregnant with his child. By December 26, Fulgham and Strong got married; however their honeymoon was a short one. Six days into the marriage, Strong had Fulgham arrested after he threatened her with a shotgun during a heated argument. Fulgham à was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and remained in jail for several weeks. During that time Carr visited Fulgham and they rekindled their relationship. His mother and Carr, both who were on friendly terms with Strong, tried to get her to write a letter on Fulghams behalf, but she refused. During one such attempt, witnesses said Carr became so enraged by Strongs refusal to help get Fulgham released from jail, that she pulled her hair and held a knife to her neck. She only relinquished the knife after being held in a choke-hold by a mutual friend, James Acome. Hiring a Hit Man James Acome once dated Carr and she believed he was the father of her youngest child, although he never acknowledged it. He was also friends with Strong and Fulgham. In early January, while visiting Carr who was in the advanced stage of pregnancy with Fulghams child, she asked Acome and his friend, Jasonà Lotshaw, if they would kill Strong for $500. They rejected her proposal. She told another friend to help her put the word out that she would pay someone $500 to kill Strong. She said that she planned to use her income tax refund to pay for the job. No one applied for the job. Acome and Strong In mid-January, Acome and Strong began dating and moved into an apartment together on January 26, 2009.à A week later Fulgham was released from jail and he moved in with his mother. Strong Disappears On February 15, Fulgham asked his mother to help him compose a letter for Strong to sign, giving him custody of their two children. This was motivated by Carr, who informed Fulgham while he was still in jail that Strong was planning on leaving the state with the children.à On that same day Strong left work after receiving an emergency phone call about her children. Around mid-day on the same day, Fulghams mother saw her son and Strong driving away from her home. Later that evening Acome returned home from work and found that Strong and her children had moved out. He then received a call from Fulgham who told him that he and Strong were back together. Reported as Missing On February 24, 2009, Misty Strong contacted the Marion County Sheriffs office and reported that her cousin Heather Strong had disappeared. The investigation led to Carr and Fulgham who were brought in for questioning. Over the course of several days and multiple interviews, both Carr and Fulgham blamed each other for the murder of Heather Strong. The Murder According to investigators, Fulgham and Carr plotted together to kill Strong because of his earlier arrest and because she had refused Fulghams request for custody of their children and was planning to move them to another state. On February 15, Fulgham lured Strong to a mobile home that was being used for storage and that was located on the property where Carrs family lived. Fulgham told Strong that Carr had hidden money inside the storage trailer. Once the two were inside, Carr, who was seven months pregnant, entered the trailer as planned. Seeing Carr frightened Strong and she attempted to leave the trailer, but Fulgham wrestled her back inside. Fulgham then tied Strong to a chair from which she managed to escape. Then Carr used duct tape to tape her body and hands to the chair while Fulgham held her down. Strong began crying and begging to be released. Instead, Fulgham forced her to sign the custody letter that his mother had helped him prepare. Carr said Fulgham broke the flashlight that she was carrying, when he used it to hit Strong over the head. He then placed a garbage bag over her head while Carr pulled off enough duct tape to wind around Strongs neck, which tightened the bag. Carr then made two failed attempts to break Strongs neck. When that did not work, Fulgham covered Strongs nose and mouth with his hand and suffocated her to death. Two days later, Fulgham returned to the trailer and buried Strongs body in a shallow grave nearby. Fulgham ended up disclosing the location of Strongs body to the detectives while he was being interviewed about her disappearance. He also told them that Carr was responsible for his estranged wifes death. Carr was being questioned at the same time and told detectives that Fulgham was the killer, but her story changed several times. Physical and forensic evidence found at the trailer, in the shallow grave and on Strongs body gave investigators enough to arrest both Carr and Fulgham and charge them with first-degree murder and kidnapping. What she told Fulgmans sister about the murder was completely different than what she told the police. At first she said she had not seen Strong since January 2009. Next she said she had information about Fulgham who she said told her that he killed Strong. That changed to discovering Strongs body inside the trailer a day after Fulgham committed the murder. She then admitted to seeing Fulgham kill Strong, which led to her final confession that she helped Fulgham carry out the plan to murder Strong. In her final admission before her trial, she provided investigators with information that proved her involvement; including an accurate description of a blanket and suitcase that she and Fulgham used when burying Strong, as well as a description of the clothing Strong was wearing when she was murdered. She also led police to Strongs shoes that had not been found on the body or in the grave. The Trial At her arraignment in April 2009 Carr waived her right to a speedy trial. Immediately afterwards, lead prosecutor Rock Hooker filed notice of his intent to pursue the death penalty. The trial began on December 1, 2010. State Attorney Brad King, the lead prosecutor, had built the case on circumstantial evidence. There was no real physical evidence found that proved Carr had anything to do with Strongs murder. However, several witnesses lined up to give testimony that they were asked by Carr to kill, or help her find someone to kill, her boyfriends estranged wife, Heather Strong. There was also testimony given about the time Carr held a knife to Strongs throat when she refused to drop charges against Fulgham after he threatened her with a shotgun. However, the most damaging evidence the prosecution presented were videos of Carr telling the police different versions of what happened the night of the murder.à He also presented the tape recordings of Carr talking to Fulgmans sister Michele Gustafson, who was working with the police. Carr supplied a detailed account of what inside the trailer, which contradicted her previous statements to police that she never entered the trailer on the night Strong was murdered. On the tape jurors clearly heard Carr talking about her attempts to break Strongs neck and how she thought it would be quick and painless. She also admitted to Gustafson that Strong fought off Fulgham, but that she helped him restrain her and that they duct taped her to a chair. She also said that she intended to tell authorities that Jamie Acome and Jason Lotshaw were responsible for the murder; although she left out that she had already implicated Fulgham. Carr described how Fulgham hit Strong hard on her head with the flashlight each time she said something that he did not like and finally how she placed the garbage bag over Strongs head and how Fulgham suffocated her to death. The jury deliberated for two and a half hours and found Carr guilty of kidnapping and first-degree murder. Penalty Phase During the penalty phase of the trial, defense attorney Candace Hawthorne spoke about the abuse Carr experienced as a child.à Members of Carrs family testified that she was traumatized as young child after being sexually abused by her father and grandfather. It had little impact on the jury who, in a slim 7-5 vote, recommended that Carr, age 26, receive the death penalty. Having remained silent since her arrest, Carr spoke out to the press after the jury voted for death. In yet another version of what happened, she said that she had never gone into the trailer and in fact did not even know that Fulgham and Strong were there. In reference to the secret tape recording that police had of her admitting her involvement to Fulgmans sister, she said that she was trying to get details about the murder to give to the State Attorney so that she could get immunity and get her children back. She needed details, so she made up stories. She said she felt pressure to make up things after the police threatened her with her children. In February 22, 2011, Circuit Judge Willard Pope formally sentenced Carr to life imprisonment on the kidnapping charges and death for the murder charges.à On February 23, 2011, Carr was moved to death row at Lowell Correctional Institution in Marion County, Florida. Fulgham Gets Off Easy Joshua Fulgham went on trial a year later. He was also found guilty of first-degree murder and kidnapping. His defense lawyer asked the jury to consider a life sentence because he suffered from mental and sexual abuse. The jury returned an 8-4 vote for a life sentence. Circuit Judge Brian Lambert upheld the jurys decision and Fulgham was given a life sentence with the possibility of parole.

Gay Parenting Essay The conception that lesbians and gay men may be parents is frequently perceived in todays society as impossible or immoral. Gay men and lesbians are often viewed as excluded from having children because sexual reproduction is related to men and women only. My approach to this uniquely controversial topic of Gay Parenting Essay will be that of attempting to analyze the Pro side first. Gays and lesbians are human too and who is to say that they dont deserve equal rights in society. Society has to realize that the modern family has developed into many different forms in recent years in that the nuclear family is not necessarily the most common form anymore. Then I will attempt to analyze the Con side which expresses the fact that two people of the same sex should not be raising and rearing children together. Many believe that if the couple is unable to produce children together, then they shouldnt be raising them as parents. Children need a balance in their lives and different sexed parents can provide that balance efficiently. Each parent (mom or dad) socializes the child differently and the child needs to be introduced to both worlds. I will then proceed to critique both sides on strengths and weaknesses, based on facts, studies, and my own opinion, and then draw some of my own conclusions on this controversial topic of Gay Parenting. Pro Position There is no valid reason for refusing to call lesbian and gay headed household families. They fall under every conceivable criterion for identifying families and the concept of a Family. They are groups of coresident kin providing jointly through income-pooling for eachothers need of food and shelter. They socialize children, engage in emotional and physical support, and make up part of a larger kin network. (O Brien and Weir, 128). There are also many homophobic ( the irrational fear or hatred of homosexuality or gay people, Biery 88) individuals in todays society who are the main cause of negative stereotypes against lesbians and gay parents. These negative stereotypes all prove to be untrue and irrational, revealing that gay and lesbian parents could be equally as fit to straight parents. The accusation that majority of gay men are child molesters has been rejected in that the overwhelming majority of child sexual abusers area heterosexual men, who abuse both boys and girls. The fear that children of lesbian and gay parents will become lesbian or gay is irrational in that studies show that the sexual orientation of the parents has no effect whatsoever on sexual orientation of youths. The concern that the children of gay and lesbian headed families will not develop so called appropriate gender identity or gender behaviour has been introduced. This was proved incorrect in that when comparing children of gay parents to children of straight parents, there was no significant difference in these two areas. The last stereotype involving the fear that emotional damage will effect the child due to coping with the issue of having lesbian or gay parents. Once again this was proved to be false and the general psychological well being of children in gay and lesbian households matches that of children of heterosexual parent households. (O Brien and Weir, 129). These common stereotypes heard frequently in todays society have all been proved incorrect and ignorant. Therefore they illustrate that gay and lesbian parents are continually stereotyped against unfairly and unjustly. Lesbians and gay men are popularly and commonly thought of by society to have a negative influence on children. This places an enormous strain and great pressure on lesbian and gay headed families, which is totally unnecessary. When we assume male-headed nuclear families to be central units of kinship, and all alternative patterns to be extensions or exceptions, we accept as aspect of cultural hegemony instead of studying it. Adversity Essay Because a person could go straight to hell for committing such a bad sin than why should America cater to such a horrible thing? 'Mrs. Dalloway' by Virginia Woolf Review Mrs. Dalloway is a complex and compelling modernist novel byà Virginia Woolf. It is a wonderful study of its principal characters. The novel enters into the consciousness of the people it takes as it subjects, creating a powerful, psychologically authentic effect. Although quite rightly numbered amongst the most famed modernist writers - such as Proust,à ââ¬â¹Ã¢â¬â¹Joyce, andà ââ¬â¹Lawrence - Woolf is often considered to be a much gentler artist, lacking the darkness of the male contingent of the movement. With Mrs. Dalloway, though, Woolf created a visceral and unyielding vision of madness and a haunting descent into its depths. Overview Mrs. Dalloway follows a set of characters as they go about their lives on a normal day. The eponymous character, Clarissa Dalloway, does simple things: she buys some flowers, walks in a park, is visited by an old friend and throws a party. She speaks to a man who was once in love with her, and who still believes that she settled by marrying her politician husband. She talks to a female friend with whom she was once in love. Then, in the final pages of the book, she hears about a poor lost soul who threw himself from a doctors window onto a line of railings. Septimus This man is the second character central in Mrs. Dalloway. His name is Septimus Smith. Shell-shocked after his experiences inà ââ¬â¹World War I, he is a so-called madman who hears voices. He was once in love with a fellow soldier named Evansa ghost who haunts him throughout the novel. His infirmity is rooted in his fear and his repression of this forbidden love. Finally, tired of a world that he believes is false and unreal, he commits suicide. The two characters whose experiences form the core of the novel - Clarissa and Septimus - share a number of similarities. In fact, Woolf saw Clarissa and Septimus as more like two different aspects of the same person, and the linkage between the two is emphasized by a series of stylistic repetitions and mirrorings. Unbeknownst to Clarissa and Septimus, their paths cross a number of times throughout the day - just as some of the situations in their lives followed similar paths.Clarissa and Septimus were in love with a person of their own sex, and both repressed their loves because of their social situations. Even as their lives mirror, parallel, and cross - Clarissa and Septimus take different paths in the final moments of the novel. Both are existentially insecure in the worlds they inhabit - one chooses life, while the other commits suicide. A Note on Style of Mrs. Dalloway Woolfs style - she is one of the most foremost proponents of what has become known as stream of consciousness - allows readers into the minds and hearts of her characters. She also incorporates a level of psychological realism that Victorian novels were never able to achieve. The every day is seen in a new light: internal processes are opened up in her prose, memories compete for attention, thoughts arise unprompted, and the deeply significant and the utterly trivial are treated with equal importance. Woolfs prose is also enormously poetic. She has a very special ability to make the ordinary ebb and flow of the mind sing.Mrs. Dalloway is linguistically inventive, but the novel also has an enormous amount to say about its characters. Woolf handles their situations with dignity and respect. As she studies Septimus and his deterioration into madness, we see a portrait that draws considerably from Woolfs own experiences. Woolfs stream of consciousness-style leads us to experience the m adness. We hear the competing voices of sanity and insanity. Woolfs vision of madness does not dismiss Septimus as a person with a biological defect. She treats the consciousness of the madman as something apart, valuable in itself, and something from which the wonderful tapestry of her novel could be woven.

Ethical Management Essay This essay seeks to identify the study of ethical management on a broad scope, and to specifically sieve out the issues which are common within the banking sector. This would include a case study on UBS and ethical problems which UBS have faced. As ethics cannot be divorced entirely from the study of sustainability and corporate social responsibility, this essay will also feature a look at banks, and their decisions which might be been unethical. The Study of Ethical Management While there might be many reasons why unethical behaviour happens, this essay would be looking at three of them in particular: 1) Personal Gain, 2) Strong Organisational Identification, and 3) Personality. . To examine the relationship between organizations and why ethical issues occur within them, we first define the term ââ¬Å"Businessâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Businesspersonâ⬠. The book, ââ¬Å"Business Ethicsâ⬠, written by William(2008), states that a business can represent and range from a start-up venture by some students, to a multinational corporation. Businessperson might be a sole proprietor running a business for themselves, or a CEO responsible for a multinational corporation. To take a broader view, we view the businesspeople under the personal point of view, and couple them with the other individuals who are within the organization. This would allow us to see why unethical behaviour can derive not only from the top management, but from every aspect of the organization. To expound on the individual, we refer to the book written by Schminke(2010), ââ¬Å"Managerial Ethicsâ⬠, where he identified ââ¬Å"four individual decision-making stylesâ⬠. The first belongs to an individualist mentality, this mentality ignores the stakeholders. The second mentality is altruistic, where the benefit of others is of the essence. The third group is the pragmatists, and lastly, the idealist, whose decisions are governed by principles and rules. Common Ethical issues faced in the Banking sector 1) Insiders Trading Insider trading, defined by Cornell University Law School, is when companyââ¬â¢s stocks or other securities are traded by individuals who have access to undisclosed and confidential information. These individuals are known as insiders. To better comprehend the concerns of insider trading, we refer to the paper by Yulong Huey-Lian(1998). Two things must first be addressed. First, who do these insiders refer to? Secondly, how is insider trading illegal? By definition from the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission(S. E. C. ), insiders are, ââ¬Å"chairmen, directors, officers, etc. , and principal shareholders with 10 percent or more of their own firmââ¬â¢s common stockâ⬠. People in these positions are likely to be able to gain access to the firmââ¬â¢s undisclosed information. However, not all insiders trading are illegal. For example, managers of firms can often purchase its own firmââ¬â¢s stocks to increase their own individual share and voting power within the firm. This train of thought also believes that the more stock of the firm the manager holds, the greater their ownership and thus a higher work morale is derived from it. Insiders are still allowed to purchase its own firmââ¬â¢s stock, if they truly believe that it is a good investment. Insider trading becomes illegal however, when trades are made by insiders with the prior knowledge of an announcement for the investorââ¬â¢s personal gain. When an act as such is committed, insider trading becomes illegal. This action is deemed unethical as it is unfair to investors who do not possess the material information. Other transgressions can include the handling of undisclosed firmââ¬â¢s information from a firmââ¬â¢s insider to a public investor. For a trade to occur under the basis of the privileged information, and for the recipient to have personally gained from the trade, both parties can be charged under the S. E. C. ââ¬â¢s regulation of Fair Disclosure. An example of illegal insider trading within banks can be seen from as recently as January 16, 2014, where David Michael Gutman from J. P. Morgan colluded with Christopher John Tyndall from Meyers Associates. As ââ¬Å"long time close personal friendsâ⬠, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority(FINRA) discovered that Gutman had shared material, undisclosed information with Tyndall over a span of 19 months. This information included pending corporate mergers and acquisition transactions, which allowed Tyndall to make informed, no-risk trading using personal and family accounts. Quoting from Cameron K. Funkhouser, he said, ââ¬Å"David Gutman had the keys to the kingdom through his position at J. P. Morgan as a gatekeeper.. â⬠, we can see to how unethical behaviour driven by an individual in the position of power, can taint the image of the firm. Enforcements have been put in place to prevent and to deter insiders from carrying out such behaviours. The SEC has instituted new rules, 10b5-1 and 10b5-2 under the code of Federal Regulations, and the enforcement of these regulations being made global just recently in 2013 after the insider trading inquiry regarding the acquisition of H. J. Heinz Company. 2) Profits before Ethics The relationship between business ethics and profits can be complicated at times. Profits values will sometimes conflict with ethical values which will lead to unethical business behaviour in the managerââ¬â¢s bid to raise profits within the firm, consequentially affecting the firmââ¬â¢s stakeholders. Watkins (2011) brings about the argument that for those who ethics concerns, the chase of pecuniary values creates a potential compromise between social ethics and profitable opportunities, a factor that links to the Goldman Rule. The rule states that the greater the profitable opportunities, the higher the opportunity cost for the firm to consider ethical behaviours. This is further described by Weber (2006), as he states that companies are not evaluated on their success based on ââ¬Å"their reputation for ethicsâ⬠, but on the basis of profitability. It is plausible now to see why banks are driven by a sole concern for profit and to raise the value of their stock. With that in mind, what are some ethical boundaries a bank could trespass upon? As a corporation whose sole objective is to increase profit, they carries the potential turn a blind eye to internal ethics; explained in the book by Reynolds (2011) titled, ââ¬Å"Ethics in Investment Bankingâ⬠, which defines internal ethics as ethical considerations in regards to their employeesââ¬â¢ welfare and the considerations in the use of the shareholder resources. These transgressions can range in forms of overworking employees, to an audit coverage of losses to portray a higher stock market price. As individuals looking for greater profits either for self or the firm, especially under the investment wings of banks, individuals can turn rogue and make unauthorised transactions which goes beyond the risk limits of the banks in hope of a greater profit. Jerome Kervielââ¬â¢s case in 2008; where even the hierarchy turned a blind eye to his risks due to the profit he was generating, and Nick Leesonââ¬â¢s famous collapse of Barings Bank in 1995 are two such examples. Investments in environmentally harmful industries Environmentally harmful projects have been a major factor against Global Warming Awareness efforts. Such investments are being funnelled by banks who are less ethical in the area of sustainability. There have been numerous campaigns to counter banks from investing into unethical projects, some of which protestors even boycotted such banks. Citigroup the worldââ¬â¢s largest project finance bank has been known to grant loans to these projects, which are harming the environment. Citigroup was indirectly related to the Camisea pipeline in Peru which has at least 5 spillages along the pipeline to date. Which not only damages the local ecosystems, but also detrimental to the livelihood of people around the world and threatens the well-being of mankind via climate change (Hogue, 2002). A glimpse of such unethical activities reveals something prevalent. It destroys our natural environment, by means of deforestation and the release of harmful gases from the burning of fossil fuels. However, Citigroup has yet see that their funding of major oil drilling and pipe laying companies not only worsens the global warming situation but also encourages environmental insecurity. Several other big-scale European banks, such as Dutch Bank and ABN Amro, came up with a policy which prevented funding of these industries. According to (ABN Amroââ¬â¢s) sustainability policy, ââ¬Å"limited to financing of companies or projects related to timber, paper, agricultural plantations, mining and/or oil and gas. The bank would consider exceptions only ââ¬Å"when extractions are delicately prepared, and holds responsibility on issues of national forest management. â⬠A positive example of how banks can fund environmentally friendly projects can be seen from analysing the Banking Environment Initiative (BEI), it aims to lead the banking industry in directing bank investments towards environmentally and socially sustainable economic development. The objective of the BEI is to also unravel ways to invest in clean energy and soft commodities. As quoted from (CPSL, online), ââ¬Å"the group, currently comprises of 10 global banking institutions which stretches across Asia to Europe, the United States and Latin America. â⬠The best way of creating a united force amongst them was if they were acting on behalf of their clients. Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) has the intention to eliminate deforestation from their supply chain. As such they would prefer to form alliances with banks and work together to counter and ultimately eliminate deforestation. Banks have got to find ways to come up with a significant source of funding to finance the journey to sustainability. 4) False Accounting Frauds False accounting fraud, defined by the United Kingdomââ¬â¢s police, is the practice where a business, works in tandem with an accounting firm to overstate or understate companyââ¬â¢s asset or liabilities with the intention of making the business appear financially stronger or healthier than it really is. As there are a multitude of reasons to commit false accounting fraud, we will not be listing all. False accounting allows for a corporation to gain higher credit ratings, report unrealistic profits, and hide losses to appeal to potential shareholders with an inflated share price. Some extraordinary cases which occurred regarding the falsification of accounts are such as the Enron scandal in 2001; where the audit and accountancy firm, Arthur Andersen was involved and convicted of assisting in audit fraud and subsequently dissolved. Enron was declared bankrupt and new laws were instituted to increase the accountability of firms who are auditing to remain independent of the clients whom they audit. Didnââ¬â¢t the code of conduct promise proper handling of UBSââ¬â¢s assets? He first began his illicit deals in late 2008, doing it for personal gains while covering his tracks with false accounting to the back office. This led to the back office being ignorant of the unauthorised trades as the regular books did not show it, instead, the profits were filed into a secret account called his Umbrella. Adoboliââ¬â¢s desk colleagues admitted to being in the know of the secret accounts, and his two bosses did not enquire into the suspicion despite the daily trading maximums being exceeded. This breakdown in corporate beliefs at the managerial level led to the unethical trading arising within the ranks of the department, and it going by unnoticed. While the integrity of the individual must be questioned, the work culture of UBS could be a factor to encourage the individual to behave unethically. Since the incident, UBS has taken a few measures to facilitate the new risk management practices. Firstly, the bank has taken step to refrain from proprietary trading. A bank would engage in proprietary trading as it benefits firms to make extra revenue. However, the disadvantage of engaging in this form of trading is that with high returns, often comes high risks. Conclusion In summary, how ethical management is derived has no hard and fast rule. However, implementations such as a Code of Conduct, or a company policy helps in setting the tone right within an organization. Through the paper, it is seen how ethical dilemmas can arise on an individual level or an organizational level. If one were to follow the many trains of thoughts regarding ethical management, they would get lost in the plethora of unions and activist fighting for ethical beliefs.

Shaker Communities During the 1800ââ¬â¢s many utopian societies sprouted in the United States. Most of these societies blossomed and faded quite quickly, but one group did not fade away like the others. This society successfully combined their faith with the reasoning of the changing times and kept their communities going strong. They are or known as the Shakers, or more formally as the members of the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing. The Shakers were inventors and thinkers who challenged many traditional thoughts and beliefs. Even today, people marvel and wonder at the Shakers and their communities, which have survived for over two hundred and twenty years and whose influences on society still are present today. Originally, the Shakers formed out of a sect of Quakers in England that was known as the "Shaking Quakers" due to their very emotional religious services. Jane and James Wardley led the group who shook, danced, sang and spoke in tongues during services. A woman from Manchester, England, named Ann Lee joined the group in 1758. In 1770 she was arrested and spent time in jail for disturbing the peace during a religious celebration. During this time Ann had her vision of "Adam and Eve having carnal intercourse" which shaped the future of the group.1 Afterwards she came to the realization that sexual intercourse caused humankindââ¬â¢s fall from grace. Following her release from jail, she went forth to tell the members of the Shaking Quakers in Manchester about her vision. At this point, Ann Lee became known as Mother Ann, the leader of the Shaking Quakers. For the next four years, the group remained in England. The Dramatic Irony in Oedipus the King
The Dramatic Irony in Oedipus the King Before taking a closer look on the identity of the protagonist and murderer, and having in mind that Oedipus the King is a very spacious and difficult to analyze play, including opportunities for discussion on quite a few topics, I have chosen to briefly focus on the dramatic irony used by Sophocles to disclose the charactersââ¬â¢ identity throughout the play. In general, irony is a very common technique used in every drama work and it is usually used by the author at times when something dramatic is about to happen the existence of which is cleverly suggested through ironic behavior of the main characters and often includes symbols, comparisons and contrasts pointing to the main idea of the author. In this sense, Sophocles is really famous for his well-known techniques of using irony and skillfully combining it with intricate relations and symbols such as light, dark, morning and night in order to convey his idea. In addition, a dramatic irony could be present when the audience is aware of critical information that the characters are unaware of. In this play, the readers already know the real relations between Oedipus, Jocasta and Laius. A general symbol of the irony used in the play is the exultation of both Oedipus and Jocasta over the failures of the oracles prophecies, however in both cases these prophecies come true ââ¬â Oedipus leaves Corinth only to find out after that he has actually found his real parents and Jocasta kills her son in order to find him later married to her and more alive than ever. In other words, each time a character tries to neglect and push away the predictions of the oracles, the audience already knows what? that their attempts are futile and in vain. This creates a clear sense of the irony used by Sophocles. An interest thing to note is the very manner in which Jocasta expresses her disbelief in oracles, which is quite ironic by itself. She describes the oracles as powerless in an attempt to comfort Oedipus, but immediately after that she prays to the very same gods whose powers she has just mocked. However, if Oedipus doesnââ¬â¢t trust the power of oracles, he definitely values the power of truth and equality. He firmly believes in his own ability to seek out the truth as a riddle-solver. This is direct contrast between Oedipusââ¬â¢s trust in prophecy and trust in intelligence. Having in mind that those two are complete distinct terms like science and religion, it is quite ironic that they both lead to the same conclusions and outcome. The truth revealed by Oedipus actually fulfills the oraclesââ¬â¢ prophecy. Ironically it is Oedipusââ¬â¢s rejection of the oracles that discloses their power. The best example of dramatic irony however, is the frequent use of references to eyes, sight, light, and perception throughout the play. The dialogue between Oedipus and Tiresias reveals it: ââ¬Å"have you eyes, / And do not see your own damnation? Eyes, / And cannot see what company you keep? â⬠Those words by Tiresias prove the blind manââ¬â¢s prophetic powers, for he already knows that Oedipus will blind himself. Moreover, he continues: ââ¬Å"those now clear-seeing eyes / Shall then be darkenedâ⬠. Where do you think the irony here is? Sophocles actually suggests two different things. Firstly, Oedipus is blessed with the gift of perception for he was the only one able to answer the Sphinxââ¬â¢s riddle. Yet he cannot see what is right before his own eyes. He is blind to the truth, and the truth is all he seeks. Secondly, Tiresiasââ¬â¢s presence as a blind man amplifies the irony in Oedipusââ¬â¢s mocking his blindness. He is a man who does not need eye sight to see the truth and Oedipus is just the opposite ââ¬â he who can see with his eyes is blind to the truth standing before him. Interestingly enough, however, is that Oedipus switches his role with Tiresias, thus becoming a man who sees the truth and loses his sense of sight. This outlines the drama in the play. In addition, the sight theme is further carried on to another level when the Chorus is disgusted and refuses to even see Oedipus. He has polluted his own sight and body but at the same time he has done the same with othersââ¬â¢ sights by his very existence. That is why when he enters blinded the Chorus shouts: ââ¬Å"I dare no to see, I am hiding / My eyes, I cannot bear / What must I long to seeâ⬠¦Unspeakable to mortal ear, / Too terrible for eyes to seeâ⬠. Ironically, Oedipus has become the same disease that he wishes to remove from Thebes and has turned himself into a sight that is more horrible than the wasted farmlands and the childless Theban women. It is dramatic that when he becomes such a monster, he is already blinded. To finish with, I have thought about the influence that this irony has on the reader and the way it touches the readerââ¬â¢s own perception of Oedipus and his actions. It is important what you generally think of Oedipus: Oedipus as incapable of doing anything to change his destiny and as a mere puppet of fate or Oedipus as a flawed character who is guilty of his own actions and as an instigator of all tragic events. I personally think that in this story you cannot escape fate no matter what you do. In an attempt to do so, both Jocasta and Oedipus change the whole structure of their families and threatening to ruin them. They have set the course of the story into action. His tragic end is not his fault for he is powerless against fate. Privacy Laws and Policies Debate Essay
Upon viewing this weeks reading as well as going through other student arguments about why they are against communication privacy laws and policies, I feel even more strongly about them being crucial for success. Those who fear being watched are the ones who know they are doing wrong. Companies have the right to see what is going on, they pay the salaries of each employee. In times like today a company needs to know what is going on within itself. This means that having access to computers, email, mobile devices along with monitoring systems in the work place. Some of my fellow classmates to not agree with some of the practices but per our reading in Workplace Privacy it stays that ââ¬Å"Under the ââ¬Å"ordinary course of businessâ⬠exemption, for example, employers may monitor email communications if the employer can show a legitimate business purpose for doing soâ⬠(Friedman, Reed, 2007). If employees know that they are being closely watched it decreases the chances of them not working or cheating the company. Some may argue that from our reading it says ââ¬Å"While employers have many legitimate reasons to monitor employeesââ¬â¢ electronic communications, they also need to consider negative implications of increased employee monitoring in terms of the effect of such practices on employee perceptions and attitudesâ⬠(Friedman, Reed, 2007). For me this does not work because if you are scared of being seen on camera or having someone go through work items then you are clearly doing something you should not be. Typical Solid Geometry Questions on the ACT Before we go through the formulas you'll need to tacklesolid geometry, it's important to familiarize yourself with the kinds of questions the ACT will ask you about solids. ACT solid geometry questions will appear in two formats: questions in which you are given adiagram, and word problem questions. We'll go through how to solve it later in the guide. Solid geometry word problemscan be confusing to many people, because it can be difficult to visualize the question without apicture. As always with word problems that describe shapes or angles, make the drawing yourself! Simplybeing able to seewhat a question is describing can do wonders to help clarify the question. Overall Every solid geometry question on the ACT is concerned with either the volume or surface area of a figure, or the distance between two points on a figure. Sometimes you'll have to combine surface area and volume, sometimes you'll have to compare two solids to one another, but ultimately all solid geometry questions boil down to these concepts. So now let's go through our ACT math tips on how to find volumes, surface areas, and distances of all the different geometric solids. A perfect example of geometric solidsin the wild Prisms A prism is a three dimensional shape that has (at least) two congruent, parallel bases. Basically, you could pick up a prism and carry it with its opposite sides lying flat against your palms. A few of the many different kinds of prisms. Rectangular Solids A rectangular solid is essentially a box. It has three pairs of opposite sides that are congruent and parallel. Volume Necessary to know $\Volume = lwh$ The volume of a figure is the measure of its interior space. $l$ is the length of the figure $w$ is the width of the figure $h$ is the height of the figure Notice how this formula is the same as findingthe area of the square ($A = lw$) with the added dimension of height, as this is a three dimensional figure. First, identify the type of questionis it asking for volume or surface area? The question asksabout the interior space of a solid, so it's a volume question. Now we need to finda rectangular volume, but this question is somewhat tricky. Notice that we're finding out how much water is in a particular fish tank, but the water does not fill up the entire tank. If we just focus on the water, we would find that it has a volume of: $V = lwh$ = $(4)(3)(1) = 12\cubic\feet$ (Why did we multiply the feet and width by 1 instead of 2? Because the water only comes up to 1 foot; it does not fill up the entire 2 feet of height of the tank) Nowwe are going to put that 12 cubic feet of water into a second tank. This second tank has a total volume of: $V = lwh$ = $(3)(2)(4) = 24\cubic\feet$ Although the second tank can hold 24 cubic feet of water, we are only putting in 12. So $12/24 = 1/2$. The water will come up at exactly half the height of the second tank, which means the answer is D, 2 feet. Either way, those fish won't be very happy in half a tank of water Surface Area Necessary to know $\Surface\area = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh$ In order to find the surface area of a rectangular prism, you are finding the areas for all the flat rectangles on the surface of the figure (the faces) and then adding those areas together. In a rectangular solid, there are six faces on the outside of the figure. They are divided into three congruent pairs of opposite sides. If you find it difficult to picture surface area, remember that a die has six sides. So you are finding the areas of the three combinations of length, width, and height ($lw$, $lh$, and $wh$), which you then multiply by two because there are two sides for each of these combinations.The resulting areas are then all added together to getthe surface area. Diagonal Length Necessary to know (Note: it will be necessary for you to know how to find the diagonal, but you don't have to memorize the formula. Continue reading for more details on this.) $\Diagonal = âËÅ¡[l^2 + w^2 + h^2]$ The diagonal of a rectangular solid is the longest interior line ofthe solid. It touches from the corner of one side of the prismto the opposite corner on the other. You can find this diagonal by either using the above formula or by breaking up the figure into two flat triangles and using the pythagorean theorem for both. You can always do this is you do not want to memorize the formula or if you're afraid of mis-remembering the formula on test day. First, find the length of the diagonal (hypotenuse) of the base of the solid using the pythagorean theorem. $c^2 = l^2 + w^2$ Next, use that length as one of the smaller sides of a new triangle with the diagonal of the rectangular solid as the new hypotenuse. $d^2 = c^2 + h^2$ And solve for the diagonal using the pythagorean theorem again. Cubes Cubes are a special type of rectangular solid, just like squares are a special type of rectangle A cubehasa height, length, and width that are all equal. The six faces on a cube's surface are also all congruent. Volume Necessary to know $\Volume = s^3$ $s$ is the length of the side of a cube (any side of the cube, as they are all the same). This is the same thing as finding the volume of a rectangular solid ($v = lwh$), but, because their sides are all equal, you can simplify it by saying $s^3$. First, identify what the question is asking you to do. You're trying to fit smallerrectangles into a larger rectangle, so you're dealing with volume, not surface area. Find the volume of the larger rectangle (which in this case is a cube): So you can use the formula for the volume of a cube: $\Volume = s^3$ = $6^3 = 216$ Or you can use the formula to find the volume of any rectangular solid: $\Volume = lwh$ = $(6)(6)(6) = 216$ Now find the volume of one of the smaller rectangular solids: $\Volume = lwh$ = $(3)(2)(1) = 6$ And divide the larger rectangular solid by the smaller to find out how many of the smaller rectangular solids can fit inside the larger: $216/6 = 36$ So your final answer is D, 36 SurfaceArea Necessary to know $\Surface\area = 6s^2$ This is the same formulas as the surface area for a rectangular solid ($SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2hw$). Because all the sides are the same in a cube, you can see how $6s^2$ was derived: $2lw + 2lh + 2hw$ = $2ss + 2ss + 2ss$ = $2s^2 + 2s^2 + 2s^2$ = $6s^2$ You can approach this question in two ways: by using the formula or by doing it out longhand. This is the exact same process as finding the diagonal of a rectangular solid. First, find the length of the diagonal (hypotenuse) of the base of the solid using the pythagorean theorem. Next, use that length as one of the smaller sides of a new triangle with the diagonal of the rectangular solid as the new hypotenuse. Solve for the diagonal using the pythagorean theorem again. Cylinders A cylinder is a prism with two circular bases on its opposite sides Volume Necessary to know $\Volume = Ãâ¬r^2h$ $Ãâ¬$ is the universal constant, also represented as 3.14(159) $r$ is the radius of the circular base. It is any straight line drawn from the center of the circle to the circumference of the circle. $h$ is the height of the circle. It is the straight line drawn connecting the two circular bases. This problemgives you the formula for a cylinder, but the ACT is often inconsistent about this. Notice that this is problem #29 (an easy-medium level question), so you are given the formula. If this had been question #49, you would likely not have been given the formula. But because you are given the formula, it's easy toplug in your values into it. Pay attention, however, to exactly what the question is asking you to do. Just like with the fish tank question above, you are not being asked to fill up the whole container with water, only some of it. So if $\volume =Ãâ¬r^2h$, then $V =Ãâ¬(12^2)(5)$ (The radius is 12 because radius is half the diameter and the full diameter is 24. The height is 5 because the question tells us that we are only filling up the container to 5 feet). $V = 720Ã⬠= 2,261.9448$ So the answer is C,2,262 Surface Area $\Surface\area = 2Ãâ¬r^2 +2Ãâ¬rh$ To find the surface area of a cylinder, you are adding the volume of the two circular bases ($2Ãâ¬r^2$), plus the surface of the tube as if it were unrolled ($2Ãâ¬rh$). The surface of the tube can also be written as $SA = Ãâ¬dh$, because the diameter is twice the radius. In other words, the surface of the tube is the formula for the circumference of a circle with the additional dimension of height. Non-Prism Solids Non-prism solids are shapes in three dimensions that do not have any parallel, congruent sides. If you picked these shapes up with your hand, a maximum ofone side (if any) would lie flat against your palm. Cones A cone is similar to a cylinder, but has only one circular base instead of two. Its opposite end terminates in a point, rather than a circle. There are two kind of conesright cones and oblique cones. For the purposes of the ACT, you only have to concern yourself with right cones. Oblique cones will never appear on the ACT. A right cone has an apex (the terminating point on top) that sits directly above the center of the coneââ¬â¢s circular base. When a height ($h$) is dropped from the apex to the center of the circle, it makes a right angle with the circular base. Volume $\Volume = 1/3Ãâ¬r^2h$ $Ãâ¬$ is a constant, written as 3.14(159) $r$ is the radius of the circular base $h$ is the height, drawn at a right angle from the coneââ¬â¢s apex to the center of the circular base The volume of a cone is $1/3$ the volume of a cylinder. This makes sense logically, as a cone is basically a cylinder with one base collapsed into a point. So a coneââ¬â¢s volume will be less than that of a cylinder. Surface Area $\Surface\area = Ãâ¬r^2 + pirl$ $l$ is the length of the side of the cone extending from the apex to the circumference of the circular base The surface area is the combination of the area of the circular base ($Ãâ¬r^2$) and the lateral surface area ($Ãâ¬rl$) Because right cones make a right triangle with side lengths of: $h$, $l$, and $r$, you can often use the pythagorean theorem to solve problems. Pyramids Pyramids are geometric solids that are similar to cones, except that they have a polygon for a base and flat, triangular sides that meet at an apex. There are many types of pyramids, defined by the shape of their base and the angle of their apex, but for the sake of the SAT, you only need to concern yourself with right, square pyramids. A right, square pyramid has a square base (each side has an equal length) and an apex directly above the center of the base. The height ($h$), drawn from the apex to the center of the base, makes a right angle with the base. Volume $\Volume = 1/3\area\of\the\base * h$To find the volume of a square pyramid, you could also say $1/3lwh$ or $1/3s^2h$, as the base is a square, so each side length is the same. Spheres A sphere is essentially a 3D circle. In a circle, any straight line drawn from the center to any point on the circumference will all be equidistant. This distance is the radius ($r$). In a sphere, this radius can extend in three dimensions, so all lines from the surface of the sphere to the center of the sphere are equidistant. Volume $\Volume = 4/3Ãâ¬r^3$ Inscribed Solids The most common inscribed solids on the ACT math section will be: cube inside a sphere and sphere inside a cube. You may get another shape entirely, but the basic principles of dealing with inscribed shapes will still apply. The question is most often a test ofYouââ¬â¢ll often have to know the solid geometry principles and formulas for each shape individually to be able to put them together. When dealing with inscribed shapes, draw on the diagram they give you. If they donââ¬â¢t give you a diagram, make your own!By drawing in your own lines, youââ¬â¢ll be better able to translate the three dimensional objects into a series of two dimensional objects, which will more often than not lead you to your solution. Understand that when you are given a solid inside another solid, it is for a reason. It may look confusing to you, but the ACT will always give you enough information to solve a problem. For example, the same line will have a different meaning for each shape, and this is often the key to solving the problem. So we have an inscribed solid and no drawing. So first thing's first, make your drawing! Now because we have a sphere inside a cube, you can see that the radius of the sphereis always half the length of any side of the cube (because a cube by definition has all equal sides). So $2r$ is the length of all the sides of the cube. Now plug $2r$ into your formula for finding the volume of a cube. You can either use the cube volume formula: $V = s^3$ = $(2r)^3 = 8r^3$ Or you can use the formula to find the volume of any rectangular solid: $V = lwh$ = $(2r)(2r)(2r) = 8r^3$ Either way, you getthe answer E,$8r^3$ Notice how answer B is $2r^3$. This is a trick answer designed to trap you. If you didn't use parentheses properly in your volume of a cube formula, you would have gotten $2r^3$. But if you understand that each side length is $2r$ and so that entire length must be cubed, then you will get the correct answer of $8r^3$. For the vast majority of inscribed solids questions, the radius (or diameter) of thecircle will be the key to solving the question.The radiusof the sphere will be equal to half the length of the side of a cube if the cube is inside the sphere (as in the question above). This means that the diameter of the sphere will be equal to one side of the cube, because the diameter is twice the radius. But what happens when you have a sphere inside a cube? In this case, the diameter of the sphere actually becomes the diagonal of the cube. But you can always break down any ACT question into smaller pieces. ACT Math Strategy: The Steps to Solvinga Solid Geometry Problem 1) Identify what the problem is asking you to find. Is the problem asking about cubes or spheres? Both? Are you being asked to find the volume or the surface area of a figure? Both? Make sure you understandwhich formulas you'll need and what elements of the geometric solid(s) you are dealing with. 2) Draw it out Draw a picture any time they describe a solid without providing you with a picture. This will often make it easier to see exactly what information you have and how you can use that information to find what the question is asking you to provide. 3) Use your formulas Once you've identified the formulas you'll need, it's often a simple matter of plugging in your given information. If you cannot remember your formulas (like the formula for a diagonal, for example), use alternative methods to come to the answer, like the pythagorean theorem. 4) Keep your information clear and double check your work Did you make sure to label your work? The makers of the test know that it's easy for students to get sloppy in a high-stress environment and they put in bait answers accordingly. So make sure thevolume for your cylinder and thevolume for your cube are labeled accordingly. And don't forget to give your answer a double-check if you have time! Does it make sense to say that a box with a height of 20 feet can fit inside a box with a volume of 15 cubic feet? Definitely not! Make sure all the elements of your answer and your work are in the right place before you finish.
